Trinidad and Tobago will introduce a smart card that uses digital fingerprints to prevent fraud and theft in pension payments. The project is an initiative of the Ministry of the People and Social Development.
Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh, the Minister of the People and Social Development, stated that the system would give elderly people direct access to pension funds because the money is deposited into their personal bank accounts.
Additionally, the biometric card system would make it easier for the elderly to access all of their social benefits.
The minister went on to say that the biometric card system is now in front of the procurement committee and should be implemented in May of this year.
