South Africa starts with the emission of Social Security biometric cards

The Government of South Africa started issuing biometric cards to be used over the country’s nine provinces for social insurance transactions.

The project started in April 2012 and the first intelligent cards were first handed in last June. These cards will allow more than 10,000,000 South Africans to receive their social benefits faster and more securely.

The biometric chips will also allow secure data storage and the identification of the card holder through his digital fingerprint.
