The new electronic Irish passport is now ready for action. This version of the document uses the latest advances in biometric technology for identity protection, while also offering the Republic of Ireland a flexible, efficient and highly secure solution.
This new document provides an exceptional level of security that includes a polycarbonate electronic data page with contactless chip inlays, making the passports quite difficult to reproduce.
Around 630,000 passports were issued in Ireland in 2012. There are approximately 4.5 million citizens who are eligible to carry this new passport.
