Facial recognition could be enhanced using other parts of the body

A study carried out by the University of Texas in Dallas showed that the use of facial recognition for identity verification could benefit from the addition of identifiers that go beyond the limits of the face.

Facial recognition could be enhanced using other parts of the body

The study compared three types of images: the face and the upper part of an individual’s body, the face alone, and the upper part of the body with the face covered. They found that human accuracy remained constant, demonstrating that the participants looked for the coincidences based on a common denominator: the features of the upper part of the body.

The study suggests that facial recognition could be improved by including features that go beyond the face alone.
