Diamond Fortress Technologies (DFT), a biometric IT security firm, has launched ONYX 4. It is a new version of mobile fingerprint authentication software that uses a device’s camera and not sensors, to verify the user’s identity.
Using only the rear-facing camera on a mobile device, ONYX4 captures an image of the user’s finger and then processes the image into a mathematical template. That template can be used to subsequently verify the user identity by matching future prints against the initial print the user captured when enrolled in the ONYX system.
Acquisition of a user’s print using ONYX4 takes approximately 300ms. Also the user’s finger can be placed at different positions, closer or farther away from the camera. The prints will match the initial print with a high degree of certainty.
