Children’s biometric data cannot be used without parents’ consent in the United Kingdom

The authorities in the United Kingdom informed schools they cannot use the biometric data of students under 18 without the parents’ or tutors’ consent.

The Government communication, issued on Tuesday for consultation, was updated in order to incorporate elements from the just promulgated “Freedom Act” 2012. This new direction will take effect in September 2013.

Biometric systems are now used for assistance control, entry control in libraries or the payment of items.

With this new law people under 18 will have to provide their parents’ consent, and institutions will have to comply with the protection law in order to get this data.
