Bulgaria implements biometric security for border control

Sofia airport (Bulgaria) has recently finished implementing a series of automatic gates for border control and electronic passports that employs biometrics to verify the passengers’ identities.

The system consists of four immigration gates which include face recognition, biometric capture of fingerprints and document verification devices.
The system scans the traveler’s electronic passport before performing face recognition and fingerprint comparison.

The biometric and biographic data of the passenger are verified against national databases and the Schengen Information System.

The new system will allow access to Bulgaria to adults carrying biometric passports belonging to Switzerland, the European Union and the European Economic Area.
