British police used biometric authentication at a music festival

The British police deployed a facial recognition system for security during the Music Festival that took place at Donington Park.

Cameras were able to scan faces at the event and images were checked against a Europe-wide database of custody images.

Police speakers confirmed that this was the first time the technology had been used outside of a controlled environment.

However, an oversight committee said that uploading custody photographs of people to a Police National Database and using facial recognition software on the images should be supervised to preserve people’s privacy.
