Biometrics in Mexico’s new voting card

The General Council of IFE (the Federal Electoral Institute) has approved the creation of a new biometric voting card with photograph, which will start being promoted in July 2013.

This new voting card will store biometric data, such as a one-dimensional barcode, photographs and security micro texts, as approved by the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE).

The use of biometrics to authenticate voters is slowly but surely becoming an international standard as it is the most secure way to avoid voter impersonation. Mexican authorities are estimating that the cost will not surpass 15 pesos per unit.
